The town and riviera of Herceg Novi

At the Bay’s entrance, below the mountain of Orjen (1895 m) lays the ancient town of Herceg Novi founded in the 14th century as the proud guard of Boka Bay. Numerous layers of history are visible through the interlacing of cultural influences and architectural styles of the Roman, Byzantine, Spanish, Venetian, Ottoman, French and Austro-Hungarian Empires and in the open spirit of town’s inhabitants. The Yugoslav Nobel Prize winner and a great admirer of the town Ivo Andric once wrote that Herceg Novi is "a town of eternal greenery, sun and stairs". Indeed, by the end of January the air of Herceg Novi is filled with the subtle fragrance of yellow and green mimosas. A town of great medieval heritage, Herceg Novi is also known by its ancient name, Castel Nuovo, so-called due to the ancient towers and fortresses of Sahat kula, Forte Mare Fortress, Španjola and the Kanli Tower. These are important cultural and historical monuments not to be missed.
Near to the Žanjice and Mirišta picnic spots, you will find the amazing Blue Grotto (Blue Cave). Visiting these incredible series of beautiful beaches and sea caves you will enjoy an experience that has been described as “descending into the blue", with the captivating iridescent deep azure water sheltered from the skies by nine meter high ceilings of mesmeric rock formations cut deep into the cliffs.

The magnificient Bay of Boka

Beneath the grandeur of the mountains, the Bay of Boka gradually unfolds to reveal its enchanting azure-blue sea tripping coolly along the coast line where a pearly chain of picturesque settlements complete an image of enthralling beauty – Donja Lastva, Mrcevac, Dobrota, Perast, Bijela, Tivat, Baošici, Ðenovici, and Kotor are waiting for you to reveal all of its natural splendors and ancient tradition glory.
Among them, a unique sight in the southern Adriatic is the Isle of Gospa od Škrpjela (The Lady of Skrpjela), located a short boat ride accross from the attractive small town of Perast. The isle was built in the 15th century with the bare hands of local seafarers, by bringing over rocks and piling them together with the wrecks of old boats. There is a charming little church dedicated to The Lady of Skrpjela sitting pertly in the middle of this endearing isle. Each July, the people of sleepy Baroque town of Perast join in the traditional festivity of The Fasinada – a ritual procession of decorated boats taking the short journey to the man-made island and throwing rocks around its shore in celebrate of its existence. According to an ancient custom, superb fish platters are prepared for a large gourmet dinner on the island to which all are welcome. Little church possesses precious organs from the 17th century, the oldest one in this part of Europe, and rich collection of rare naval objects accompanied with great library with ancient books.
The oldest city of the Bay of Boka, Risan originated in the 3rd century BC and was the seafaring, commercial and workshop centre of the Illiyrian state. The great palaces were built with the best Greek marble and decorated with magnificent sculptures and mosaics. These have lasted up to the present and form an invaluable cultural treasure. Among the large number of mosaics is one of the God Hypnos, which is remarkable in that it is the only mosaic figure of the God of Dreams in the world. Also, there is Risan’s beautiful beach of Carina, awarded with Blue Pennant flag for its outstanding qualities.

Lovćen

Located more than 5.500 feet above the sea-level, Lovcen mountain is proclaimed to be National Park of outstanding beauty and the ultimate symbol of modern Montenegrin culture and history. It is a sacred place of Montenegro, where the body of the great Montenegrin philosopher, poet and diplomat Prince Bishop Petar II Petrovic Njegoš reposes on the topmost peak of Lovcen in a chapel and a tomb. Being the great master peace of a famous Yugoslavian artist Ivan Meštrovic, the great mausoleum was built in Prince Bishop honor after the II WW. From Lovcen's top there can be seen the whole natural beauty of Montenegro and parts of Serbian and Albanian landscapes.

Skadar Lake

Being the biggest lake in South Eastern Europe and the biggest National Park of rare bird species Skadar Lake is one of the most beautiful sites in Montenegro to be seen. The lake and the surrounding area are registered under the Rasmar Convention, in the world list of wetlands of international importance. Located below the sea-level, it has a large number of sandy beaches and picnic sites, which are renown not only for their beauty but also for their restaurants offering a wide range of local specialties. Also, there are the remains of Montenegrin Prince Bishop’s summer house in the place of Karuci. The entire location is well known for its intact natural beauties and is ideal spot for bird watchers, fishermen, hunters, lovers of medieval history, architecture, and for gourmets.
