The City Museum of Herceg Novi was founded just after the WWII. The museum building was built more than 150 years ago and is known by the beautiful botanic garden comprising more than a hundred carefully chosen Mediterranean and subtropical plants. Beautiful surrounding of the museum building is the great place to enjoy the glorious history of an ancient town.
For more than half of a century, the Museum and Gallery Josip Bepo Benkovic has been a town’s centre of cultural and artistic life. It has a permanent art exhibition comprising over 200 paintings, sculptures and graphics. A part of the gallery is workshop for preserving and restorating, and it also comprises ateliers for painters and sculptors. The Museum hosts annual Winter Salon, the great regional Festival of contemporary arts.
Herceg Novi is well known for being a beloved town and summer destination of a famous writer, diplomat, and Nobel Winner Ivo Andric, where he often stayed and sought the inspiration for his great works. For this great man, Herceg Novi was a town of „eternal greenery, sun and stairs“. After his death, Andric’s house has become the great cultural legacy and today it is the Club of literates.
The Napoleon’s Theatre from the 19th century is the treasury of the rich cultural heritage of the town of Kotor and the entire Montenegro for it was built in 1811 as the first theatre in this part of Europe.
Established in 1937, the Museum of Perast is the great cultural spot of Boka Kotorska. It hosts the archives of the municipality from 15th century onwards, including rich collections of over 300 paintings, sculptures and archive artifacts from the second half of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century, donated by local descendants of noble families. Through museum’s displays and collections, it is possible to trace the historical and cultural development of this lovely picturesque medieval town during the reign of the Venetian Republic (15th to 18th century) and throughout the 19th century rule of the French and Austrians.
